Why you (seriously) shouldn’t use a free blog host

Hi ,

I must confess to a dark secret. Something in my blogging past that I'm ashamed of.

I used to be cheap. For my first blog, I created a free blog on Blogger. Uncle Scrooge would have been proud of me.

My reasoning was, I wasn't earning any money from my blog, so I should keep expenses as low as possible.

Like someone falling in love, I saw everything through rose-tinted glasses. I brushed minor irritations aside. Which relationship didn't have teething pains?

Alas, the relationship started to sour after a few months.

When I needed help, there was no live tech support.

My blog's URL was long and hard to remember, like so: myfoodblog .blogspot .com.

I couldn't add plugins and themes to customize the blog the way I wanted.

I couldn't collect email addresses and build email lists.

And worst of all, I didn't own my content or the blog I was posting on. Blogger owned it and they could shut it down whenever they like.

Then, one day, I came across this remark by Syed Balkhi of WPBeginner. He said:

"We've been with HostGator for over 5 years, and they haven't given us a reason to switch. Their always helpful support and server administrators have saved our site on numerous occasions."

I toyed with the idea of switching to a self-hosted blog. The idea was tempting. But I shelved the thought because I didn't want to go through the headache of transferring a site.

For some weird sadistic reason, I dragged out my misery for one full year. (Yup, I didn't know what I was thinking!) Time passed.

During a trying incident with Blogger, I recalled Syed's endorsement of Hostgator. After weighing my options, I figured I had nothing to lose. (Hostgator had a 45-day guarantee.)

I switched to a self-hosted blog on Hostgator with bated breath. And the immediate improvement blew me away.

I had my own domain name without the word "blogspot" in it.

Hostgator's live chat support was efficient and available 24/7/365. It didn't matter where in the world I was. I could also call and email tech support.

No one ever complained that my blog was down. And my blog loaded lightning-fast.

Here's the kicker: Hostgator only costs $3/mo. I should have kicked Blogger to the curb long ago.

Don't repeat my mistake. If you're starting to blog, start with a self-hosted blog. And pick a reliable and wallet-friendly host.

I've negotiated a discount for SBO readers (72% off) with Hostgator. This discount should apply when you click on the link. You can also enter the coupon code: STARTBLOG

Go to Hostgator and click "Start Your WordPress Blog" now.

If you've already got hosting but are unhappy with the service, it's never too late to switch. Hostgator has a dedicated team to help you transfer your site.

This service is free for new accounts within 30 days of signup.
